It can’t be easy to cancel an event of this magnitude to your organization. All the hard work for the majority of the year to get logistics right, acquire sponsors and volunteers and to cancel with just about 12 hours to go.
For my father-in-law about to partake in his 39th swim, it was a mixed emotion….his goals are delayed a year.
Looking at the forecast, I was slightly skeptical but when I went to the scene this morning it was clearly the right decision and these pictures don’t do it justice to how windy it really was. It would not have been a safe and enjoyable event for the swimmers, Coast Guard or volunteers.
I hope all the donors, swimmers, sponsors and volunteers are not swayed from coming back next year and continuing this great tradition.
